His smile is all mischief.  It says he likes to cause trouble and, most of all, that he likes getting away with it.  But there’s something very closed off and somehow icy in his eyes.  Oh yeah, those green eyes are made of green ice.

Arilyn jumped into his arms and hugged him tight.  “I knew you could do it,” she whispered.  The warning in his head bolted to danger zone, but she felt so good in his arms, so warm and solid and real, he ignored the flashing red lights for a while.

Yes, I was a coward.  I was afraid of her not telling me that she loved me, and I was afraid of her telling me that she did love me.  I was afraid of the palpable tie between us, afraid of the ribbon that laced through my ribs and around my heart that was also laced and tied around hers.

Wow.  He was too old to handle crazy.  Truthfully, in his opinion, he was too old to be single.  He just wanted to relax and live a peaceful life with a woman he loved.  That wasn’t too much to ask for.

My fists clenched at my sides, and it took everything within me not to pick up the statue of Jesus on the coffee table and hurl it at the wall.  Trying to keep a lid on my emotions, I breathed in and out several times.  No matter how pissed I was, I would not disrespect my mother in her home by flying off the handle.

He’d changed into running shorts and a tank top that showed off his carved arms and cut shoulders.  His skin was a lovely golden brown from the sun.  Funny, any woman would be going nuts right now to be alone with him, in front of a roaring fire, in a deserted cabin.  He was a walking, talking sex god, and here she was, playing Scrabble in her Walmart clothes, with no makeup and crazy hair.

It was pretty awesome.
